Matthew Samuels

I am a self-taught, abstract painter always looking to expand the boundaries of my work and practice. I get inspiration by looking, I learn by doing, and I create by experimenting. From toothpicks to industrial brooms, I use all types of unconventional tools to achieve the effects I desire. My studio supplies and my painting practices may appear chaotic to others, but they work perfectly for me as they open my creative channels and let the necessary spontaneity arise organically.

I place my canvases on the floor of my studio, and paint by standing on ladders, stools, and the floor. I have devised a method of heating acrylic paint to attain just the right consistency for my purposes. With energetic gestures I fling, squirt, drip, squeeze, spray, drop and throw paint from all angles and heights until a finished piece emerges. Each completed painting resonates with its own unique color vibrations and inherent rhythm and tempo.
