Born in Bayreuth, Germany in 1967.
Inspired by Balthus’ sublte paintings, Nuetzel became his student in Paris. Balthus suggested a stay in Italy, in order to imbibe Caravaggio’s light and dark paintings. Subsequently Nuetzel visited Madrid where Velasquez taught him loose brushwork. A further station of his apprenticeship was Nuernberg, where he studied with Johannes Gruetzke for six years. Through him Nuetzel learnt integrity, courage and above all, that painting also requires a sense of humour. The last period were extensive painting trips with Sargent. His plein air paintings made Nuetzels paintings see the light.
He currently lives and paints in Vienna, Austria.
