Susan Foley

My paintings are born from a lifelong love of nature and the lasting impressions of the places I have experienced. Having lived in France, England, and Ireland before returning to my hometown in Texas, I have brought something of each place back with me. These memories and the connections I have formed with different environments have shaped not only the way I paint, but also the way I view the world around me.

Rather than depicting these places as they appear, I hope to capture their emotional presence—energy, rhythm, and atmosphere. I am guided by instinct rather than planning. Each work becomes an exploration, drawing me into a deeper personal response as it develops.

Color is central to my process, carrying the emotional weight of each experience and shaping how memory, place, and feeling are translated into form. Through layered color, instinctive mark-making, and expressive gestures, each painting develops organically. Working on a large scale is equally important in my practice. The size of the canvas gives the piece a physical presence that feels natural to me. As it evolves, it becomes less like a painting and more like a window into something beyond itself.
