Laurie Lipton was born in New York and has been drawing since the age of four. She was the first person to graduate from Carnegie-Mellon University with a Fine Arts degree in drawing. Laurie has lived in Holland, Belgium, Germany and France, London & currently resides in LA .

Lipton wanted to learn to paint like the 17th century Flemish Masters, but only abstract and conceptual art was taught at schools. She cut her classes and sat for hours in the library copying Durer, Memling and Van Eyck. She tried to teach herself to paint in egg-tempera but failed. Finally she developed a unique way of drawing that mimicked the technique by building thousands of tiny lines to get a tone. It was an insane way to draw, and took a horrendous amount of time, but was able to get the same kind of luminous detail that the Flemish painters had achieved.
