Josef Winkler

Winkler is an artist of the informel with very individual traits. The mature, later works show the diversity of the artist who does not endlessly repeat his themes and forms but constantly seeks and sizes new ground as soon as a cycle of paintings is complete.

Winkler ist ein Maler des Informel mit einer starken individuellen Geste. Das reife Spätwerk zeigt die Wandlungsfähigkeit des Künstlers, der stets nach neuen Ufern aufbricht, sobald ein bilderzyklus abgeschlossen ist.

Winkler est un peintre de l`informel aux traits fortement individuels. Son ouvre tardive et mure montre l`apitude de artiste à se diversifer, lui toujours èn quete de nouveaux rivages, ausstot un cycle de peintures terminé.

Winkler was born on 15. Nov. 1925 in Vienna where he completed his schooling and in 1946 began studying at the Graphical School and Research Institute.
In 1947/48 he then studied Fine Art at the Viennese Academy under Prof. Josef Dobrowsky and nude drawing under Prof. Herbert Boeckl.
From 1948 to 1950 Winkler was a scholar at the Guildford School of Art, England.
