Maya Veshnik is an artist working in the traditional batik technique — painting on natural silk and satin using lightfast, water-resistant dyes. Her work is inspired by the beauty of nature, especially birds and animals, often depicted with a realist sensibility and rooted in the elegance of Chinese fine brush painting.
In addition to wildlife, Maya draws inspiration from the ancient cultural legacy of her homeland. She recreates the rock carvings of the Sulek Petroglyphs — a sacred natural reserve — transferring these powerful ancestral symbols onto silk. Through this, she seeks to remind viewers of the importance of memory, connection, and honoring the wisdom of those who came before us.
Her paintings radiate warmth and softness, shaped not only by the themes she explores but also by the luminous texture of the silk itself. She describes the first drop of dye touching the fabric as the moment when magic entered her life — and it continues to guide her creative path today.
Maya Veshnik is a Russian-born artist currently based in Ukraine. She specializes in silk painting and traditional batik. She studied at the Children’s Art School named after D.I. Karatanov and graduated from the Faculty of Decorative and Applied Arts at Khakass State University (2000–2005).
From 1995, Maya worked as a set designer at the “Skazka” Puppet Theater. In 2002, her work on the performance Jakob Jakobson was honored with the prestigious Golden Mask Award in the categories of Best Director and Best Designer.
Her background in stage design, fine art, and textile work all merge in her current artistic practice, creating a deeply personal and poetic visual language.
