This work was influenced by Maurice Merleau-Pontys Phenomenology of Perception (1945) and my consequent investigations into the visual experience. The title of my work refers to the scientific terms used to describe rapid eye movements made by the human eye as it scans a scene (saccades) and then pauses at points of interest (fixations). The moment of fixation is also the moment of perception; a flash of perceptive clarity, like a split second spark of recognition. And yet, amazingly, these moments can happen when we are seeing or experiencing something for the first time.

I find this idea intriguing and rich in terms of how it can drive my practice. I am investigating how our vision connects with a scene and how our minds turn vision into experience, offsetting what the eye has seen so fleetingly with knowledge, history, culture, memory, imagination and emotion; the awareness of being.
