As an artist and educator based in the East Midlands, I navigate the intersection of teaching and artistry, believing firmly that each discipline enriches the other. My formative years in Birmingham instilled a deep fascination with brutalist concrete architecture, which now serves as the primary muse in my work. The relentless, stark aesthetics of post-war structures, particularly the Gravelly Hill Interchange or 'Spaghetti Junction', embody a raw, visual power that continuously inspires me. This iconic landmark, a symbol of industrial strength and complex engineering, provides a continually unfolding source of inspiration, challenging me to explore themes of connection and solitude amidst the urban sprawl.
Lately, I've reintroduced oil but I'm known to primarily work with charcoal to explore themes of urban decay and the unexpected beauty in utilitarian structures. My pieces seek to challenge perceptions, urging viewers to find elegance and resonance in the mundane and the monolithic.
