Yadira Torres

My work explores the garden of the feminine experience, in its splendor and disappointments. I strive to make art that confronts and lays bare the experiences that silence, shame, and tell women they are not worthy, while simultaneously portraying hope, vulnerability and beauty. I want my art to represent and also re-present the narratives women embrace and cast aside, which is why I utilize the naked female form in much of my work. My process utilizes a layering technique where the figures emerge from the background, literally and figuratively, using colors and aspects of nature to convey the overall mood of each piece. My work includes various mediums that include mixed mediums, photo transfers, silkscreens, drawings and oil paintings.

I am a Puerto Rican, Philadelphia based artist born and raised in Reading, PA. While earning a Bachelor's in Fine Arts from Moore College of Art & Design 1999-2003, I studied abroad in Venezuela, Mexico and Italy. During my travels, I became heavily influenced by cultural art, and works expressing the universal condition of women.
