Early Life and Struggles
Born in 1977 and raised on a council estate in South London, BLOCKHEAD's journey is a narrative of resilience, strength, and the transformative power of art. Facing racial abuse and bullying from a young age, BLOCKHEAD was pushed into the harsh realities of South London gang culture. Without friends or a father figure for guidance, he often found solace in his thoughts, a coping mechanism that evolved into a struggle with mental illness.
His mother, who toiled in low-paying bank jobs, often placed cardboard in her shoes to keep her feet dry during winter. Attending a school 15 miles away with barely enough money for bus fare, BLOCKHEAD's school life was overshadowed by worries about food and transport, making it difficult to make friends or focus on his studies.
At 16, a close friendship offered a brief respite from loneliness. Tragically, this friend was murdered a year later, plunging BLOCKHEAD into two decades of emotional numbness, culminating in a mental breakdown and a diagnosis of PTSD, depression, and anxiety.
