Alicia Velázquez

My work explores togetherness, intimacy and belonging, aspects of time, and the convergence of internal and external realities. I use different media interchangeably, like performance, drawings, sculptures, and installations. Working with- and from the body, my ritualistic performances and installations act as scaffolds where humans, objects, lines, and colors are invited to construct and experience moments of togetherness. I work mainly with series and ritualistic works, often years long, and which are embedded in my daily personal routines.

For the collection offered here I chose a special selection of one of my longest ritualistic series named "Periscope". In this series, each day a drawing is produced using the same size and technique: archival-ink pen and watercolor on paper.
Each day an imaginary, abstract periscope peeps to capture that which happens both inside and outside of my body. A journal of moments, each drawing depicts the embodied narrative I capture at that moment in time: the inner, the outer, thoughts, memories, the world’s news, or the imaginary.
