ABOUT
EDUCATION

My work is about women: the complexity of our emotional states with always changing moods, feelings, and thoughts, as we evolve through our experiences and interactions. I reveal the inner world through a little glance or turn of the head, or through expressive gestures and drama of hands. I celebrate being part of nature. Nature with its organic lines and patterns, overwhelming at times, absorbing the figure, still exists in harmony with us, completing us and adding beauty.

I work without much preparation, often with minimal pencil drawing, going straight to ink and color. I especially enjoy beginning with monotypes or reduction relief prints. It’s like solving puzzles: first playing with colors and shapes, and then drawing and painting on top until figures and faces emerge and stare back at me, revealing their personalities. I interact and develop, exaggerate, play with textures, but always preserve some enigma for both me and the viewer.

My training as an artist began at a young age, in my home town, the historic Rostov-Veliky, near Moscow, Russia. At the age of 15 I was accepted to study painting and drawing at the Kalinin Art Academy in Moscow. In 1994 I came to the United States to complete my B.F.A. degree at the University of Wisconsin–Stevens Point.
