Antonio Saporito is a contemporary Italian artist based in Turin, Italy, with numerous accolades recognizing his distinctive artistic vision. His works have been exhibited widely in Italy and internationally, including in museums, foundations, Italian Cultural Institutes, Artissima, and more. Saporito's unique artistic style has attracted the attention of some of Italy’s most respected art critics, such as Paolo Levi, Gian Giorgio Massara, Vittorio Sgarbi, Angelo Mistrangelo, Guido Folco, Luciano Carini, Massimo Centini, and Giulia Silato.
THE GEOMETRIC SPATIALISM
The geometric spatialism is the Saporito's original research. Strongly anchored to material, this one, cut, shaped and perforated with surgical and geometric rigor, represents the synthesis of Saporito's art.
Steel, aluminum, copper and lead are wisely transformed into labyrinths of carved signs to reveal the beyond there is behind the material. The rigor and the essence that characterize his works become elements to transcend reality, to look and scan what exists behind the appearance, in the continuous search of the unknowable, of the future, of the unreachable mystery of man.
Saporito's early artistic development was shaped by modern and contemporary figurative art of the 1960s. His figurative works from this period drew inspiration from prominent artists of the time, such as Ennio Morlotti, a key figure in Italian figurative art and 20th-century cultural movements; Franco Rognoni, an independent Italian artist of the period; Ennio Calabria, a leading proponent of European figurativism; Ugo Nespolo, along with the influences of American Pop Art and the masters of Italian Arte Povera.
ENCOUNTER WITH LUCIO FONTANA
As an artist within the Spatialism movement, Antonio Saporito found inspiration in major figures such as Atanasio Soldati, a central figure in Italian abstraction, and other influential artists like Matt Moore and Max Bill, who shaped his early exploration. However, it was his direct connection with Lucio Fontana, the historic master of Spatialism, in the early 1960s that deepened Saporito's understanding of spatial art. His encounters with Fontana in Milan and Albissola became formative, offering invaluable insights from the founder of the Spatialist movement.
On December 1, 2023, the exhibition 'Spatialism and Geometry of Antonio Saporito' will open at Palazzo Birago di Borgaro in Turin, a historic building designed by architect Filippo Juvarra and now home to the Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Crafts, and Agriculture of Turin. Curated by the Associazione Culturale Galleria Folco – Italia Arte – Miit Museum, this exhibition will feature significant works by Antonio Saporito, who was recently awarded the Stresa Prize for his artistic career. The event represents a major institutional occasion, enhancing the visibility of contemporary art within one of the City of Turin’s most important historical, artistic, cultural, and social landmarks.
