There is inherent beauty in plants that survive in the harshest conditions. Their refusal to succumb to the elements, surrounding them. Dry, thirsty rocky outcrops. They stand proudly, littering the hillside with flashes or intense red. Defiant beacons scattered across a barren land. I use charcoal ...

Paul Vosloo grew up in the village of Gonubie, South Africa. While studying Graphic Design at NMMU he discovered a natural affinity for the medium of pencil and charcoal. Since graduating from NMMU, he has travelled and worked around the world as a graphic designer. He has exhibited at the Ann Bryant Art Gallery, Tamasa, Imbizo Gallery, Etchings Gallery, The Green Gallery and had a solo exhibition in Cape Town. With each drawing I try to capture a fleeting emotion or moment. Sometimes that means a moment between time, the next a moment of drama and madness. In nature, as in life there is beauty in stillness and the fight to survive. I love the raw beauty and dark emotion of black and white imagery created in charcoal or pencil. I feel that I am at the beginning of my artistic journey. As each drawing is finished I find a new sense of urgency to create another. Since moving to the UK I have found a renewed energy to create, inspired by the endless inspiration living just outside London.
