Tranquility, chaos and loneliness are present in my work on large size paper. These are the landscapes that go back to my youth, the naked dunes of Appelscha, the woods of Friesland in the North of the Netherlands. Accentuated lines in combination with large, sometimes sober areas of colour give a dynamic and depth to my work. The layering of pigment, use of alkyd paints and neon colours are important aspects of it. Composition and perspective provide a balance between chaos and tranquility. Sometimes I make replicate drawings and paintings of different format from specific compositions. I work with mixed techniques on paper or with oil paints on canvas or cardboard. The touch is recognizably a personal one. I use impulse and suggestion in my paintings and drawings, and want these to attract though their spontaneity and unique colouring. Thus landscapes are created that are sometimes inviting and exude warmth but at other times are without pity, sad and isolated. Other sources of inspiration are provided by photos from the newspapers, time-frames of suffering in the world, sailing voyages or the autumn in my garden. I attempt to reach abstraction and suggestive simplicity in small and large format.
