Light is the inspiration and subject matter of my practice. For many years I have explored the themes and variations of slices of 3D digital scans of bodies and objects. In their latest incarnation this base material is transformed into translucent and luminescent Perspex shapes. Lit by LEDs, the shapes float” on a surface, beautiful, elegant and transcendent. They are reminiscent of satellite images of cities at night, or aquatic life, or microscopic biological structures of the cells of plants or bones. They imply a space that is both vast and exterior or intimate and interior, in the mind. The colour varies in its combinations, while the works are meditative, mesmerising and intriguing. Lightmotif combines new technology, both digital and analogue, and the age-old artistic tools of colour, line and of course, light. I also love traditional paint and pastel, which, combined with contemporary technology leads me to new ways of thinking and seeing. I want my paintings to convey beauty, power, joy and exhilaration, and wit. My images should be in your mind’s eye going to sleep at night and waking in the morning. I was born in South Africa. I studied there and in the USA, at the University of Wisconsin, under the auspices of the Fulbright Programme, where I received an MA in Printmaking and Drawing. I live in the UK but have spent extended periods of time in California, and South Africa. The light, colour and ambience of all three places influence my work. My paintings and light installations are held in public, corporate and private collections around the world. Visits to my studio are by appointment. I work to commission.
