Constantin Sultana is a Romanian artist born in 1953 in Bucharest, where he is also currently living and working. He studied Painting, Graphic and Ceramic at the School of Arts and Crafts from Bucharest with Marinela Tucaliuc and Vasile Cercel, two professors very acclaimed in the local context. He developed his practice independently, without any particular affiliation to galleries or cultural institutions, until 2009 when he established, together with his sister Rodica Sultana, the artist-run space ‘Atelierul de Creație Sultana’. By organizing workshops for kids and mounting or hosting exhibitions for their fellow artists, Atelierul de Creație Sultana was a necessary endeavour in a time when, only two decades after the fall of the Iron Curtain, the art scene in Bucharest wasn’t very manifold. Approaching various themes and stiles, his artistic practice is characterised by diversity, experiment, and innovation. He even coined the term ‘rulografie’ referring to a personal painting technique he uses, consisting of applying lairs of colour on canvas with a mini roller (hence the name ‘rulografie’). Besides painting, Constantin Sultana approaches other means of expression as well, like drawing, the mixt technique of collage, installation or printmaking technique (linocut, lithography). His artistic vision consists of diversified themes ranging from Freudian topics to abstract landscapes.
