This painting was intuitive, and there are dozens of shades of green, warm and cool. The shapes interact touching or not, and the background of neutral grays and tans is varied. To me it feels like a rain forest during a warm downpour. It is done on a gallery-wrapped canvas with painted sides in neu...

Denise Hillman, a California-based artist, is a studio painter working primarily in oil. I have always felt that being an artist was my destiny, and would sit for hours drawing as a child. After college, I had a long and successful career in marketing while raising my two sons. I’ve since developed a robust art practice that includes abstract, figurative and narrative subject matter often inspired by my travels. Some of my key inspirations are the Bay Area Figurative Painters like David Park & Richard Diebenkorn; and the New York Abstract Expressionists like Elaine and Willem de Kooning, Lee Krasner and Rothko. I regularly show in juried exhibitions throughout Northern California and Arizona where my work can be found in private collections. Artist Statement: For me, the act of creating is both a search for self and the desire to connect with others in an unspoken way. I strive to inject emotion into my work that sparks a response from the viewer while leaving much to the imagination…to state visually what can’t be articulated in words. When a person is standing before my work, I want it to evoke a memory; perhaps a place they’ve been, someone they’ve known or simply a particular feeling from a moment they’ve experienced.
