Born in Lima, Gisella Stapleton's work is inspired by her inner world, dreams and memories as well as the strength of women and the richness of Latin American culture and folklore. Using a wide range of materials, including oils, acrylics, gouache, recycled jute, and through painting and embroidery, she creates a distinctive style that fuses tradition with contemporaneity. The way I paint the human figure speaks of volumes and emotions, I don't intend to copy reality but to tell about my inner world and dreams, for that reason I often use distorted proportions and exaggerated features to convey intense feelings and portrait the inner beauty of my subject. Moving from her native Peru to Spain, Gisella began exhibiting her work starting at the University of Valladolid, followed by a series of exhibitions in Community and Cultural Centres such as Ronda Barcelona Cultural Centre. Since moving to London in 2011, she has exhibited her art at various exhibitions and festivals in London, including Battersea Art Station at Battersea Arts Centre, ECOFeminism Festival at the Art Pavilion and the Via Arts Prize finalist exhibition at the Brazilian Embassy. She has also been commissioned for murals that speak about diversity and inclusion, like the University of Roehampton's 'R' and the murals celebrating the community at Elephant and Castle, commissioned by Latin Elephant Charity. Gisella has recently been commissioned by STUDIO CANAL and VISIT LONDON the creation of a mural in Sutton Walk (Southbank) that celebrates Paddington as a multicultural icon and a symbol of the diversity in London. She has been invited to an Art in Residence at KEW GARDENS (From December to February 2025), where she has created the artworks (2 murals, 3 big paintings on canvas and 20 pots) for the Orchid Festival 2025. Gisella is currently taking part of The Big Egg Hunt where she has been invited to create a painting for this exhibition on the streets of London from the 24th of March until the 27th of April. Gisella Stapleton now lives and creates from her studio in London, England
