Parthenope is one of a series of paintings inspired by the names associated with the Sirens in Homer's epic poem The Odyssey. The expressionist marks echo the cadence of their voices imagined as heard by Odysseus, aided by the fluidity of the oil paint.

Angela Clarke was born in London in 1957 where she trained as a painter and printmaker and continues to live. Since then she has exhibited her paintings, prints and drawings in London in solo shows, as well as selected groups such as The Royal Academy Summer Exhibition throughout the UK. Her paintings have explored lyrical abstractions of subtle tones as well as compositions of rich colour. They possess a depth through a layering of intense and gestural marks, also expressed within drawing. Clarke’s work has been inspired by poetry such as Homer’s Odyssey and T.S Elliot's The Hollow men, with recent works exploring Reverie inspiring paintings, drawings and prints.
