"Escadas" is one of my favorite series. I click "ESCADAS 009" in 2014 at Rocinha, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. This series is entirely of DOCUMENTARY PHOTOGRAPHY, these spaces are real. I started photographing favela staircases over 15 years ago when I still lived in a favela in downtown Rio de Janeiro...

After having lived for a couple of years in Rio de Janeiro city’s favelas,I realized it would no longer make sense either to keep aiming the camera to the signs of misery and violence, or reinforcing visual clichés. People attach little value to one of the main characteristics of a favela: house building. In favelas, construction is a part of their culture, a common-people architecture, vernacular architecture, with its knowledge and materials and its negotiation of space. Rio de Janeiro is a city of hills, and favelas built on them need many stairways. If around 2 million people live in favelas in the city of Rio, at least half of them live in some kind of slope. From having lived there, I understood their strain. My work is about the most urban population of the world, Latin Americans.
