Simon Walker has worked in the media for his entire professional career. For 20 years he was an award-winning photojournalist for a variety of internationally renowned newspapers, magazines and photographic agencies. These included The Independent, The Sunday Telegraph, The Sunday Express, Stern magazine, Gamma Liaison Photo Agency and most recently as a senior staff photographer on The Times newspaper. During his time as a photojournalist he travelled extensively and covered many major global news stories including numerous wars and conflicts. He was in Iraq both in 1991 and again - this time as an ‘embedded reporter’ - in 2003 and was in South Africa to witness the end of apartheid during the ‘90s. During the late 1980’s he also travelled extensively with the British Army documenting the Parachute Regiment which culminated in the publication of a book. Over the years his work was characterised by the huge variety of stories that he shot. He documented the rise of New Labour in the ’90’s and the emergence of Brit-pop, through to the annual fashion shows in London, Paris, Milan and New York. In 2005, as The Times Newspaper changed to its tabloid format, he was appointed News Picture Editor and was responsible for news picture coverage for the newspaper both in print and online. In 2010 he stepped away from traditional journalism to set up a photo-sharing social network and launched it in 2012. After several years building up the business he joined brand strategists Hall & Partners where he established a new methodology using photography as a research tool. More recently he has worked as the Visual Editor at The Financial Times Weekend and as UK Picture Desk Editor at Reuters in London. Currently he is working again as a photographer as part of a global network of creatives called Group of Humans. He is a Trustee of Tender, an arts charity working with young people to prevent domestic abuse and sexual violence by promoting healthy relationships based on equality and respect, and he is a Fellow of the Royal Society of the Arts and Manufacturing. He had a book published by Bloomsbury in 1993 called “Para - Inside the Parachute Regiment”. He is married with two children and lives in west London.
