Initially working in white earthenware clay or black wax, the maquettes are then transferred into plaster, then sometimes bronze. The sculpture is at once both figurative and abstract, and the subject is always some aspect of the lone human form, be it a torso, a bust or limb. The essential core of the lone human figure, expressed sometimes as a limbless, headless torso with all its weight and bulk is a motif that recurs again and again. It best portrays the significance, isolation and reality of modern existence. These are not idealised images of the heroic or beautiful, but an externalised ‘feeling’ of what lies within; our heavy selves’ JV
