Since 2010, I have been visiting countries that have been transformed by industry. I have created work based around the landscapes of dockyards and shipping ports throughout Britain and Europe. My interest in these locations stemmed from my father who was a saturation diver in The North Sea, Scotland. After viewing footage and images of oil rigs, compression chambers and figures welding deep under water I was drawn to these otherworldly landscapes that fuel our economy.
In 2016/17, I was awarded with a six month residency at the Swatch Art Peace Hotel in Shanghai which is situated in Huangpu; an area of rampant commercial, industrial and residential development.
Spending the majority of time alone, I immersed myself within the streets of the city, cycling through varied districts of Shanghai. I felt acute anonymity, the freedom to observe and interact. I was forced to let go of pre-existing creative ideas as I became preoccupied with how we, as humans, adapt and connect within an environment under constant construction, perpetual mutation and rapid change.
