I grew up in a small town in southwest Oregon. Nature was my back yard. Trees were for climbing and carving your initials and maybe those of a girl friend and rope swings. Maybe that influenced my love of the beauty of wood patterns and flowing colors.
Nature is the real artist. i just have to look for the story and harmony of the wood. These guide my carving tools.
My education was as a civil engineer. But engineers only look at the structural capability of the wood. I have never heard an engineer talking to a piece of wood.
I have taken some carving classes to develop specific
techniques. Ending up with a pile of wood pieces and chips has been my best teacher. My primary sources of wood come from the giants that have fallen in the forest and sometimes from riverbanks and the ocean's unique weathering of wood from unknown origin.
