Christopher Schmitt

Christopher Schmitt is a lens-based artist residing in Ottawa, on unceded Anishinaabe territory. His work explores disruptive technologies and the impact they have on the networks of our minds, and on our land. Schmitt’s work examines the idea that perhaps this dark side is not a mirror reflection of our society, but rather a new world entirely. His work helps viewers navigate between abstraction and reality, providing visual clues to this uncertain virtual landscape.

Schmitt was the recipient of a City of Ottawa Creation and Production Grant in 2022, an Ontario Arts Council Exhibition Assistance Grant in 2023. His photographs have been published in PhotoEd (Spring/Summer 2022, Winter 2023), Do It For the Grain, Ottawa Private Art Label (OPAL), and have been purchased by the City of Ottawa.

Schmitt holds a Photographic Arts and Production diploma from the School of the Photographic Arts: Ottawa (SPAO). He has completed residencies at the SPAO Centre (2022) and the Ingenium Research Centre in Ottawa in (2022, 2023).
