ABOUT
EDUCATION

I started photography in the 80’s, learning from my father, an architect. I carried his heavy Nikon around, learned the technical principles and the fundamentals of perspectives and compositions. I returned to photography in the 2000’s, now as a practicing physician. At first, photography and art may seem contradictory or even a diversion from a demanding profession. That misses a great commonality between the two: medicine and photography are both arts informed by science and technology. A knowledgeable and competent physician can miss the greater picture of understanding the person behind the patient as easily as a photographer with in-depth understanding of techniques can miss the moment or the composition. In candor, mastering both arts are the quest of a whole life.
All photographers seek to capture the essence of a location, of a subject, of a moment. Physicians chasing an elusive diagnosis look for what has not yet been noted, the combination of objective and subjective nuances that, alone, are meaningless but, as a whole, reveal the truth. When photographing I too seek the unseen, the overlooked moments that thousands walk past every day.

Apprenticeship and self-taught photographer, learning predominantly from the works of artists from the Bauhaus and from the Magnum agency.
