Marjolyn Vanderhart

For many of us, our identity is tied to memories from our childhood. There are moments when we see an image, and we are taken to another time and place. One that seemed simpler. My goal is to find these triggers of memory. However, I also try to find a way to give us a deeper sense of who we are today by using these images from the past. There is a bridge between the vintage style and a modern perspective. What is old becomes new. A contemporary vision of our reality.

For the past 30 years, I have been creating art that speaks to memory and identity. Focusing on this search has propelled me to create stories that are a deeper engagement with who we are. Working in collage story telling inspired by classic films, vintage ads and retro pop culture, the art has developed a unique vision of the past speaking to the present.

I received a BFA from Parsons School of Art and Design in New York City and Ringling School of Art and Design in Sarasota Florida. I also hold a HBA in Mass Communications from Carleton University in Ottawa, Ontario.

Currently I work from my studio in Toronto Canada, and I travel through the US exhibiting in highly juried art fairs across the country. I have won several Awards and artists’ Grants. I am also represented by several galleries in Toronto and my work has been collected by several corporate collections in North America.
