EDUCATION

A child learns to see the world around her with eyes of wonder and curiosity. Before society gets a chance to imprint itself on the child’s consciousness, there is a period of grace, in which all things are defined as pure aesthetic experiences. Without knowing the history of art, a child can be an audience of immense appreciation and awe. It is from this frame of existence that I approach art making. Unfortunately, the world and all its glories have corrupted me. My expression is often a response to those things that cause me pain and grief. I strive to put forth images that sing, that have meaning to others, and that tell a story. Acrylic has been the medium of my choice because of the restrictions for using flammable materials in condominiums. (Oh, how I dream of a warehouse space) The colours and textures of acrylic paint are simple and accessible. It is flat and accessible to most viewers. Over the last ten years I began experimenting with water-based oils, and mixed media pieces (such as the collages). Even today there are times I must tell myself to be brave, for a blank canvas can be terrifying, much like the blank page for a writer who begins a new novel.
