Phuong C. Nguyen is an artist based in Vietnam, a country rich in tradition and cultural heritage. She specializes in creating paintings with Sơn Mài (Vietnamese lacquer) - a unique and luxurious art form that gracefully highlights Vietnam’s contribution to the global art landscape.
Her artworks are crafted with authentic natural resin sourced from lacquer trees in Phu Tho province, Vietnam. Additionally, she incorporates vibrant color pigments, gold and silver leaf, eggshells, mother of pearl, and other materials to create distinct textures (matière), which is a defining feature of Sơn Mài art.
Each of her pieces is accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity and a custom frame (optional) designed to enhance its beauty.
Phuong C. Nguyen graduated from the National Economics University in Hanoi, Vietnam in 2013 with a degree in Business Administration. Although she never attended an art school, her passion for art remained unwavering. In 2013, she met an elderly artist, Mr. Pham Chinh Trung, who had taught at some of Vietnam’s most renowned art institutions. Under his guidance, she began a journey of learning, studying his techniques one by one, a practice that continues to this day.
What makes her teacher extraordinary is his dedication to preserving the traditional Vietnamese art of lacquer painting, known as Sơn Mài. Mr. Pham Chinh Trung remains one of the few artists creating Sơn Mài in its purest form. He was even featured in a Business Insider video titled “Why Sơn Mài is So Expensive”, where he shares his insights into this precious art form.
