I’ve become interested in openings in the urban fabric, spaces of nothingness that still mean something. This example is a space between two buildings in a typical Dutch city center, with an overgrown evergreen threatening to overtake the limited garden space yet also exuding tidiness through its br...

My work depicts the intersections of architecture, nature and documentation. I draw on observation, memory and imagination to compose images of buildings and landscapes that you recognize, but aren’t real. And I use (documentary) maps and paint to create a sense of place. As a historic preservation architect I observed the emotions surrounding buildings. I aim to capture this in my art, not in a nostalgic sense, but to inspire memory or feelings regarding places or structures, or even reflect something symbolic related to our life experiences. Having worked in urban planning and historic preservation (UK, The Netherlands), I have tremendous respect for craftsmanship, quality, and the time needed to achieve these. In my own practice, I am committed to deepening skill and experimentation. My current work involves repurposing old maps, painting them transparently, and cutting/pasting pieces to build architectural compositions. I’ve heard often this has a phenomenal effect when seen in person. The works look like paintings, but are built with pieces of paper, and are varnished to protect the colours. I also work on commission, incorporating your personal maps and/or depicting architecture that has special meaning for you.
