Rowshan Begum

Abstract expressionism artist Rowshan Ara Begum works in a variety of mediums including, but not limited to oil, acrylic, graphite, charcoal as well as photography and alternative photographic processes. She draws inspiration from Josef Albers, Mark Rothko, Jackson Pollock, and Paul Klee who are amongst some of her favorite artists. She is inspired by abstraction, expressionism and minimalism, but focuses primarily on the process, experimentation, and implementation of art making. Her works are abstract explorations in mark making that are usually created in series, each with its own concept and technique in color, light and movement. She is driven by color psychology and human emotion that she portrays through a myriad layer of colors over previously dried layers of paint. She later reveals the past underlying treasures by scratching back and excavating the layers with odd shaped instruments to create different effects and illusions in color play and movement. The process can take weeks until she is finally happy with the overall composition and balance of her contemporary abstract expressionism pieces.
