Through painting and sculpture, Chicago-based world builder Emily Veldman captures the narratives of her expansive fictional land. In her work, she creates imaginary safe spaces as a method of healing and coping with mental health.
Her world is an escape from the harsh realities of adulthood. In the blank space on the canvas, she blocks out the responsibilities and anxieties of adulthood and replaces them with a colorful fantasy landscape. The stage is set with patterns, bright colors, and composition. By combining these elements the audience is transported to an alternate universe where personified flowers and animals live and play.
