Matthew Thomas Charles Brown (b. 1973, South London, UK) is a British ex-pat living in New York. His work is raw, refreshingly honest and shaped by the influence of Gen X British subculture and a life stretched across the American landscape, weaving language directly into the artwork to guide, interrupt or deepen the viewer’s experience.
An artist with a multidisciplinary background, he began his career as an art director before moving into product design, where form, function and storytelling converged. His work is deeply informed by a strong interest in architecture, particularly the balance between structure, material and human experience. Drawing from these fields, his abstract, contemporary artistic practice explores space, proportion and quiet tension, blending industrial sensibilities with a refined, conceptual approach.
Brown’s work is driven by reduction and honesty. Each piece seeks quiet confrontation — an invitation to pause, reflect and consider what remains once excess is removed. Simple. Unobstructed. Human.
