Thomas Lepilliet

Thomas Lepilliet alias Tom L. (born 1983) is a French artist and cinema projectionist based in Toulon, in the south of France. Belonging to a generation that grew up with analog cinema and witnessed the rapid shift to digital technology, he experienced this transformation both professionally and personally.

Still working as a projectionist, Tom operates at the intersection of two eras of image-making. His artistic practice emerges directly from this position. Using fragments of original 35mm film, he constructs images in a process he calls “Pixel Art(gentique)”, where each film cell becomes an analog pixel.

Through this material language, his works explore the transition from mechanical cinema to digital imagery, questioning how technologies reshape perception, memory, and our relationship with machines. Drawing from film history, popular culture, and the physical remnants of projection, Tom transforms the material of cinema into contemporary artworks that reflect on the evolving dialogue between analog heritage and digital culture.
