Karen Coates

I was born in San Jose, Costa Rica. At the age of six, my family immigrated to Miami, Florida where we established our roots. My father was very artistic, working as a furniture upholsterer and drapery maker. My love for the arts started at a young age where I watched my father drawing as a hobby, and I spent my time sitting on the floor next to him drawing. My two brothers and I took to artistic expression through drawing and painting through out our youths and into adulthood where we all make our living using the arts.

I was always first to volunteer for artistic projects and art contests at school and at the age of twelve was recognized as a gifted artist by Mothers Against Drunk Drivers and How Magazine. My art pieces were published by both organizations in magazines and billboards all over the state of Florida. These achievements along with recommendations secured my placement in a Magnet School for gifted artists in Middle School. I was further awarded with acceptance into the number five high school in the country at the time, Design and Architecture Senior High (D.A.S.H.) for gifted artists in Miami, where I studied Art and Fashion Design.
