I am Winnie Chen, Toronto-based watercolor artist. Before focusing fully on painting, I worked as an industrial designer, an experience that shaped my approach to composition, structure, and visual balance.
Immigrating to Canada profoundly influenced my artistic direction. The country’s landscapes, seasonal transitions, and urban wildlife became central sources of inspiration.
Nature is at the heart of my practice, including landscapes, wildlife, and subtle traces of human presence within natural environments. I work with watercolor to capture fleeting moments—soft light, shifting seasons, and the gentle quiet that settles over familiar places.
Watercolor’s transparency and fluidity allow each painting to unfold organically, guided by both intention and chance. Rather than focusing on precise detail, I use layered washes and softened edges to evoke mood, atmosphere, and stillness.
Through my work, I invite viewers to slow down and reflect on the relationship between nature and the built world—how seasons, weather, and time soften architecture and transform spaces into places of calm, memory, and quiet connection.
