Sandra Oglesby

I create art through a combination of fantasy and labor. Whether they take the form of an interactive sculpture with edible elements, a piece of jewelry or, a functional object; my ideas come from my imagination which is highly influenced by my own background. During my childhood, my mom always seemed to be involved in some sort of craft, like macaroni angels or a campfire made of tissue paper and a flashlight. Throughout my childhood we never ate fruit loops except for, strung on a piece of thread around our necks. My dad was a mystical figure whom I idealized. My clearest picture of him is sitting in his freshly built gazebo on hot summer day, thirty feet from the house, with a frosty glass of beer.

I am intrigued by things I dont fully understand, like royalty, the military, underwater creatures, sexuality and beauty. My lack of understanding abstracts these ideas for me; they seem intangible. My work is at the same time eerie yet enticing. From the Bible I learn to be good a steward of every thing God gave me, including my body, but it isnt spelled out how to do this.
