Born on a farm in Germany - came to England in 1969. Live and work in South London in a converted church hall. My Dad introduced me to cosmology and that was a strong influence earlier on. Now I use my own daily experiences as an inspiration. I work with steel, chopping industrial angle section into random bits and welding these differently angled pieces into boxes which are freestanding or hang off the wall like giant birdboxes. It makes them appear human, vulnerable, chaotic, even funny. Parallel to that I carve marble sculptures in Italy. In 2006 I won a residency to learn to carve marble in Pietrasanta in Italy for three months. This material has opened up a perfect counter balance to steel. I carve away and reveal rather than construct.
Studied Ceramics at Sir John Cass School of Art in London 1972-5. Course in metal fabrication 1985-6. Exhibited sculpture in group and solo shows in Germany, Vienna, New York, Moscow, Poland and, of course, England. Awarded Krasner Pollock grant in 1991. Arts Council grant in 2004. Stipendium from Fondazione Sem in Pietrasanta in Italy for 3 months working in marble, 2006. Made a suspended sculpture for the Leicester University Library. Curated Sculpture Show for Leicester University 2012 and 2013. Received Honorary Doctorate from Leicester University. I am Vice President of the Royal Society of Sculptors
2020/21 I am showing a group of 5 ceramic sculptural installations at Kings Place with Gallery Pangolin-London entitled 'Who Will Buy My Dark Dark World' - it's quite a challenge but then so is life during the pandemic with added Brexit. I am responding to the changes all around.
