Shawn (Shu-Cheng) Zheng, B.A. (Industrial Design), M.A. (Fine Art), He was appointed professor at the Academy of Fine Arts, Fujian Teacher’s University before he immigrated to Canada in 1989. Shawn has developed a distinctive art style in painting with ink and color. Also he is an art instructor in the Department of Art and Art history at Univesity of Saskatchewan. His paintings were exhibited in Canada, the United States and China. He was awarded the Outstanding Cultural Contribution Award by the University of Saskatchewan in 2017 in recognition of his outstanding artistic contribution in painting “Fly High Canada”. “Shawn Zheng is one of the most important contemporary artists whose work bridges the art worlds of China and Canada in a delicate style.”---Peter S. Li, C.M, FRSC Shawn Zheng is a Chinese-Canadian visual artist whose work explores the convergence of Eastern philosophy and Western abstraction. Working primarily with ink and acrylic, Zheng draws deeply from the traditional Chinese aesthetic principle of “Qi Yun Sheng Dong” — the spirit resonance and dynamic vitality that bring art to life. Rooted in the essence of Chinese brushwork yet expressed through modern abstract language, his paintings reveal an emotional and intellectual dialogue that transcends cultural boundaries. Each stroke embodies a balance between spontaneity and intention, inviting the viewer into a space where form dissolves and feeling emerges. Zheng’s practice seeks to express shared human experiences—emotion, intuition, memory, and reverence for nature—through a minimalist yet powerful visual vocabulary. His art is not only a personal meditation but a bridge across time and geography, evoking both the stillness of ancient traditions and the dynamism of contemporary life. Now based in Canada, Zheng continues to refine a body of work that honors tradition while speaking in a universal voice. His paintings have been collected by admirers who are drawn to their serene energy, inner depth, and harmonious tension.
