About Me

Wolfgang Karl is a versatile artist whose work bridges classical modern art influences and contemporary techniques to create striking, original pieces. Deeply inspired by legendary modernists such as Van Gogh, Picasso, Dalí, and Chagall—whose works he encountered firsthand during a formative visit to Paris in 1972—Karl’s art reflects a unique synthesis of surrealism, landscape, and symbolic abstraction.

His preferred medium is pastel enhanced with colored pencils, enabling him to create vivid, textured landscapes and surreal compositions. His sculptures echo the fluid, dynamic lines found in his drawings, distilling forms down to their essential symbolic nature. Embracing technology, Karl integrates photography and digital techniques into his practice, producing vectorized works that explore everyday objects, especially his ongoing fascination with “bottlemania.”

In addition to fine art, Karl applies his creativity to graphic design, crafting logos, CD covers, and stage sets—including the 1992 production of Mozart’s The Magic Flute at Freiburg’s Musikhochschule. His richly layered approach invites viewers into a world where tradition meets innovation.

Wolfgang Karl began his artistic journey in the early 1970s with formal academic training. Inspired by his studies and exposure to classical and modern art, he explored a diverse range of styles and media, including pastel, colored pencils, oil painting, watercolor, sculpture, and digital art.

A pivotal moment in Karl’s education was his visit to Paris in 1972, where he experienced original works by masters like Van Gogh, Picasso, Dalí, and Chagall. This deeply influenced his stylistic development and thematic focus. Over the years, Karl has continued to refine his skills and experiment across media, combining traditional techniques with modern digital tools to create his distinctive body of work.
