Gerrit Hahn

I was born 1979 in Münster / Germany and started my career in photography after I finished an apprenticeship as a confectioner and a design degree. I have mainly worked in commercial photography for quite a while, until some years ago I shifted focus more and more to documentary and narrative work. I have lived and worked in Berlin for many years and after some time in NYC and a lot of travelling I am living in Johannesburg at the moment. 2014 I finished my first independent documentary film as Producer, DOP & editor and am currently working on several film an photography projects.

I left high school after grade 10 to learn how to bake cake & cookies and to make chocolate sweets and these things. During that time I also taught myself how to print black and white in my first dark room and decided to leave the bakery for the photo studio.

Some internships and years as an assistant (3 years studio assistant to Olaf Blecker) later I started to work as a freelance photographer when I was 25 years old. As a classic self educated professional I am creating my own learning environment by participating in MOOCs and workshops on a regular basis.
