William Attard Mccarthy

William was born in Malta in 1972 and spent his early childhood years in London, England as his family had moved to Bethnal Green, where they lived for seven years before relocating back to the sunny island in the Mediterranean in 1979.

The seeds for his passion for photography were planted when his older sister gave him a Kodak Instamatic camera loaded with film for his 6th birthday. He proceeded to the back garden and his first-ever photos were shot on that day; those first photos are still cherished and kept safe in an old photo album, even if the colours have slightly faded away due to age.

William got his first education at Our Lady of the Assumption School on Bonner Rd, Bethnal Green until the age of 7, where he continued his primary education at Luqa Primary in Malta. He then got his secondary education at The Archbishop's Seminary in tal-Virtu' in Rabat, Malta.

From an early age, William was passionate about anything to do with the Arts, and to this day he sill considers himself an avid bookworm with a keen interest in non-fiction books. He also performed Breakdance in the early 80s and took Latin & Ballroom dancing classes, and also was a lead guitarist with a local metal band called Extremity in the early 90s. He still plays guitar, and is teaching himself the piano.

William is a self-taught photographer who built his skills by means of practice, and reading books upon books as well as a variety of monthly subscription magazines covering the art of capturing lights and shadows.

His uncle, Roger McCarthy, was an established photographer who ran his own studio in Tarxien and this also served as a catalyst for his passion.

William served as official photographer for the launch of Air Malta's rebranding and a two metre cut-out of one of the airline's fleet of craft still graces the main corporate offices in Luqa.

He as also published a 200 page photographic essay book called "Journey to the Stars - A Collection of Astrophotography and Nightscapes", which is available in paperback as well as ebook format on Amazon Kindle and Apple Books.
