Shulamit Kopf painted still life and landscape for many years but more recently discovered the alchemy that happens between paint, brush and intuition in creating abstract art. With her own vocabulary of shapes, colors and forms, her choices and improvisations are mostly subconscious with an enthusiasm for experimenting with new materials and techniques. She may grate a charcoal stick into wet paint and let the black specks set at random, or mix sea salt into wall filler putty to create gritty texture. Her work is visually tactile.
Although she celebrates color, she experiments in works that are in whites, grays and blacks or various shades of ochre. But even those will flash a brazen spot of burgundy or blue.
In addition to a BA degree in philosophy and an MA in English literature, Shulamit Kopf has completed studies for a BA degree in Art history at Tel Aviv University. She has studied with painter Ronit Binder and at the Hatahana Studio in Tel Aviv with Aram Gershuni, Ilya Geftner, Adam Cohen and Ran Tenenbaum. She has also studied landscape painting with American artist Lois Griffel, former director of the Cape Cod School of Art.
