I was born in Germany in the 1950s. I later studied Geophysics in Berlin, worked in scientific projects to find water in Northern Africa and did my PhD in Geophysics. Working in the Research and Development departments for geophysical contractor companies in Germany and the UK I moved to the UK in the early 1990s. Even the most creative work in science can over time get a rather one-sided effort, so much so, that I compensated by training in my spare time as a psychological counsellor and volunteered as counsellor for a drugs and alcohol agency for many years. I got married late, but nevertheless this had a positive effect on me and my wife and changed our outlook on life to new levels. After retiring early, I went to art college and then studied at the Open University for an Open BA (Hons) degree courses that had connections to human creativity, like creative writing, linguistics and art&design. I am now visual artist and designer, exhibit and sell my artworks. Future plans are to produce digital art online and to integrate visual art and creative writing in what I do.
Looking at my body of work, I notice the following characteristics that I summarise in form of an artist statement:
My art and design practices follow an abstracting process that can retain figurative elements and may have a meditative or surreal focus. I explore limits and possibilities of different materials and procedures by combining analogue and digital art production methods. I develop ideas into concepts by utilising a range of computational tools to simulate possible outcomes using printing, scanning, changing digitally and/or physically, re-printing and re-scanning until I arrive at a final artwork or design.
Three lines of artistic enquiry are dominant in my work: symbolism in nature, abstract versus nature contrast, and observational photography.
I exhibit my work since 2014 locally (Brighton Artist Open Houses, galleries) and I take part in international exhibitions.
Artworks vary in size from 4” - 4’ (10cm - 120cm) and are printed on various media like paper, acrylic or metal sheets, wood or fabric.
