Since boyhood I’ve has been drawing, painting, and sculpting a variety of creatures—a natural adjunct to my enthusiasm for nature study and outdoor adventuring. Parallel interested merged my early zeal for acrobatics with snow skiing, with lucky results. By age twenty I’d had graduated from the modest teenage slopes of southern Michigan and was travelling the world as a member of the U.S. Freestyle Ski Team. I toured the Louvre on my first morning in Europe, the stirring dawn of using skiing travels as a platform for furthering my arts education. Twenty years on and several World Championship medals later, a stop in Hawaii signaled a new turning point. Like many visitors, I was struck by the natural beauty and energy of the islands, but there was also a compelling sense of home I’d not felt in all my travels. A move to Maui helped refocus my artmaking, giving impetus to a lifelong desire to translate natural beauty into form and words. My recent works have been featured in the Hawaii National Parks Centennial Exhibition on Maui and in Restoring the Voice of Hawaii’s Native Forests on the Big Island of Hawaii.
