James Gloria is a painter, instructor and craftsman working in oils, watercolor, and the 16th c. art of Scagliola; the art of inlaid, marbled plaster.
His work reached a significant turning point in 2016, with a change in materials focused on materials and process. This has led to a series of exhibitions of these dynamic plein air landscapes and botanicals.
What I use to make art affects the outcome, and I believe the mark and textural power of materials are as meaningful as the product. Through my work designing theater sets, my studies in Italy, my teachers and my teaching, and my professional life as an artist I have developed a strong mastery of materials...and the materials continue to surprise me with opportunities and new paths.
In the summer of 2016 ,I began a series of paintings in my garden. Working in a familiar medium--oil on linen--I decided to alter my materials somewhat. On the palette, I gradually increased the amount of marble dust in the paint to create dimension, which lead to a broader use of impasto without a glazing effect. The resulting paintings are more about surface and immediacy of place than strict representation.
My paintings--plein air landscapes, botanicals, still lifes--are created with the intention to share with my viewer not only the essence of a physical space but also the story of light and materials and how all components arrive together on a surface of a painting because of particular training, a particular vision, at particular time made evident through the making, or creating, of the art.
