JOÃO SERRANO was born in Lisbon in 1951. He attended the lithography and graphic arts course at the Escola de Artes Decorativas António Arroio in Lisbon. Headed for The Netherlands in 1971, where he lived, studied and worked as an artist until 1990. In 1972 he studies photography and engraving at the Free Academy in The Hague, and Contemporary Art History at the Free University of Amsterdam. In 1973 he was admitted to the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam, where he attended several departments such as Painting, Graphic Arts, and Textile Design under the guidance of Alexander Metz, Wim Brusse, Herman Gordijn, Charles Jongejans, among others. Em 1975, he installed his first atelier in the Dutch city of Heemskerk and joined the Group of Fine Artists «Ateliers Mariaschool». In 1980 he moves to Amsterdam, where he undertakes several activities in the area of the fine arts and the audiovisual, mostly in the context of the so-called «Grupo de Amesterdão», composed of different Portuguese-speaking artists living in The Netherlands.
