About Joanne Oatts

I'm currently experimenting with abstraction, influenced by natural phenomena, geometry and the texture of paint and surface.

I've always been fascinated by the surreal and the moments in between everything we perceive as reality. This - and life long love of colour and light - feeds my work.

I love exploring the texture and movement of paint on a surface. I aim to create a visceral relationship between the viewer and my paintings - making the viewer experience a tactile sensation towards the images.

Born in 1976, Leigh-on-Sea, Essex, I've moved all over London and the South East of England, and currently live in leafy 'Metroland', a name coined for the NW suburbs of Greater London on the Metropolitan line.

Artists that inspire me: Mad C, Jenny Saville, Botticelli, Sarah Lucas, Lee Krasner, Frida Kahlo, Dali, Picasso, Lee Miller, Braque. Cezanne, Barry Kite, Bridget Riley, Peter Blake, Tamara de Lempicka.

Places that inspire me: Anywhere near water, Liverpool, Pembrokeshire, San Francisco, California, Madrid, Chicago, New York.
