Creating art is the ultimate act of self-deception. I think that as artists we attempt to rationalize the creation, but at best can tangengentially corroborate the most mundane and obvious aspects of that creation. I think this is the great and mysterious aspect of what we do.

I was born in 1958, and studied photography for most of my younger days. Being introduced into photo etching in university opened my eyes to the possibilities of alternate media, which I have been exploring since. At some point I felt that photographic imagery became a limiting factor and began drawing only. I developed my own form of automatic drawing, creating a series of abstract characters, visual words with no definative meaning. I would draw a model without looking at the page, thinking that what I then created would be translated from my hand to the page. Seeing then became a metaphor for the translation of what I see on a consious level to an abstraction of what I was feeling.

I have attempted to continue this idea through my personal work. I believe that art is a dialog between the consious self, the one I define as myself, and the more ambiguous subconscious - or irrational self.
